Exterior door stripping that brings solid timber back to life
An exterior door takes the full force of the British weather, and decades of paint build up fastest of all on a front door. At Global Door Stripping we offer two options for stripping an exterior door — a same-day hand stripping service and a normal processing-times dipping service. Both bring the door back to bare wood, lifting away every layer of old gloss, primer and filler so the solid timber underneath can be repaired if needed and finished properly.
Whichever service you choose, you get the door back as honest bare timber, ready to oil, stain, wax or repaint — with a flat £30 collection and return.
Reasons homeowners choose dipping
Reveal the original timber
Period front doors hide beautiful joinery and grain under thick gloss. Dipping brings the character back.
A better fit & seal
Built-up paint makes exterior doors bind and stick. Stripped back, they hang, close and weather-seal as they should.
Far cheaper than replacing
A solid hardwood front door costs a fortune to replace like-for-like. Restoring keeps the door and its character for a fraction.
Ready to weatherproof properly
Bare timber takes oil, stain or exterior paint far better than tired old layers, for a finish that lasts.
No mess at home
The messy work happens in our workshop. Hand over the door and get it back transformed.
Old paint removed safely
Including stubborn or older lead-based layers, stripped off-site rather than sanded into the air at home.

How exterior door dipping works
Assessment
We assess each door, its dimensions and type, and agree the service you need — same-day service or normal processing times of around 7 working days.
Same-day stripping service
With the same-day service we collect the door early in the morning, take it to our workshop, hand strip and sand it there, and deliver it back to you the same afternoon.
Normal processing times
If you choose normal processing times, we collect the door, dip it to remove the layers of paint, neutralise, dry and sand it smooth (ready for finish), then deliver it back within around 7 working days.
Types of exterior door we strip
- Front & entrance doors — period and modern, panelled and glazed.
- Victorian & Edwardian doors — original four-panel doors with fine detail.
- Cottage & plank doors — ledged-and-braced and reclaimed originals.
- Stable & back doors — split doors and utility doors.
- Hardwood doors — oak, mahogany and meranti (oak can darken slightly).
- Garage side doors — timber personnel and side-access doors.
- French & glazed doors — dipped with extra care around the glass.
- Gates & timber joinery — side gates and other solid timber items.

Exterior door stripping FAQs

Yes. We dip front and entrance doors to remove every layer of paint, primer and varnish, returning the door as clean bare timber ready for you to oil, stain or repaint.
Most solid timber doors strip back beautifully. We neutralise and dry doors in controlled conditions to minimise grain raising or joints opening. Very old or fragile doors are assessed first, and we always offer a hand stripping process where dipping is not recommended.
Yes — glazed and part-glazed doors can be dipped, but there's a slight risk of the glass cracking, so any glass left in is at the owner's risk. We take extra care around glass.
Exterior doors need a durable, weatherproof finish — an exterior oil, stain or exterior-grade paint. We return the door as bare timber ready for your finish, and can wax timber on request.
Depending on the process you've chosen, it can be done the same day or with normal processing times of around 7 working days. Contact us for more info.
Yes, please remove all handles, hinges, letterplates and door furniture before collection.
