Fireplace stripping that reveals the original cast iron
A painted-over cast iron fireplace hides some of the finest detail in a period home. At Global Door Stripping we strip fireplaces and cast iron inserts back to bare wood and metal — lifting away every layer of old paint to bring back the crisp Victorian and Edwardian castings underneath.
Removable inserts, grates and surrounds come to our workshop for dipping; fixed fireplaces are stripped in situ by our on-site team. Either way you get the ironwork and woodwork back clean and bare, ready for grate polish, stove paint or your own finish — with a flat £30 collection and return.

Assessment
We check the fireplace’s construction and condition, and agree whether it’s collected for workshop dipping or stripped on site.
Collection
Based on the service you choose, we collect the fireplace, or our on-site team comes to you to strip it on site.
Dipping
Each fireplace is lowered into a warm caustic solution to lift away every layer of paint, then pressure-washed clean.
Neutralising
We neutralise any residue left.
Drying & sanding — optional
We dry any wooden fireplaces in controlled conditions and sand them smooth, ready for you to apply the finish of your choice.
Quality inspection
Every fireplace is checked against our standards before it leaves the workshop.
Delivery
We return your fireplace promptly, ready for refitting and your finish of choice.

Fireplace stripping FAQs
Removable cast iron inserts, larger combination fireplaces and fixed fireplaces stripped on site are all quoted individually, depending on size and the number of paint layers.
Yes — it's one of our most popular jobs. We dip removable inserts and grates back to bare metal, revealing the original castings ready for your chosen finish. We can also do the job on site.
Yes. Fixed fireplaces and surrounds that can't be removed are stripped in place by our on-site team, with the area masked and protected.
Bare cast iron can surface-rust if left, so we dry it carefully and you should finish it reasonably soon with grate polish, stove paint or a protective coat. We do not offer grate polish or any finish for metal pieces.
The cast frame can be dipped; original tiles are assessed individually and usually left in place or removed first, as dipping isn't suitable for tiles. We can however strip tiles on site with the hand stripping service.
Removable inserts are usually collected and returned within a week or so. On-site fireplaces are booked in after the survey — we'll give you a timescale with your quote.
For workshop dipping, removable inserts should be taken out (we can advise). For fixed fireplaces, we strip them where they are.
